The Every Third Person Theory |
Why would the news media or politicians ('Spin Doctors' for the sake
of this discussion), ever think they could continually get away with
the blatant manipulation of the truth, and with continually making
promises and commitments that are never kept?
Well, frankly speaking they don't think they can get away with it .
. . they know they can get away with it! And the general
public continually validates it for them on a daily basis, by buying
into or endorsing their messages or behaviors, seemingly without
question, and never holding them accountable for any of their
actions.
They operate on what is fast becoming known as the "Every Third
Person Theory." The basic premise of this theory is that every
third person is an idiot. Sounds rather harsh doesn't it?
But, this is exactly how they regard the general public, and if you
start to look around, you may begin to agree with the perspective.
Now for clarification, this theory has nothing to do with level of
education. As we may all well know, there are many highly
educated people out there who are (sad to say) idiots. People
frequently confuse the concept of education with concept of
intelligence and vice a versa, and in reality, one concept is
neither dependant nor exclusive of the other.
The "Every Third Person Theory" is all about the reality of
percentages. It considers that only "one third" of the
population will have common sense and the willingness to ask hard
questions and to think for themselves. The next "one third" is
in the middle and generally apathetic and easily swayed by group
think or follow-the-herd mentality. And then of course the target
group, the "one third" non-thinking, non-questioning, jump behind a
cause because it 'feels right' idiots. (Of course none of us want to
believe we may be part of that group.)
In examining the "Every Third Person Theory" from a mathematical
perspective (yes, it is always about the numbers), the 'Spin
Doctors' know that they only need to win over that "one third" of
the population who will not question their motives to gain
significant support of their agenda or position. They know
that the second "one third" of people will likely be too apathetic
or uninterested to check out their claims, or the successes or
failures behind them. They also know that many in that group will
simply follow the herd like they always have or quietly slide over
to their side because it's the easiest course of action. Or they
will do nothing!
That leaves the final "one third" of people who will question and
who will think for themselves, and who will demand results and
accountability. But, if you have been following the math, the
'Spin Doctors' don't really have to care about that "one third"
except to the extent that the group can influence that above
mentioned group in the middle.
So, in the grand scheme of things there is never a strong
constituency group to hold the 'Spin Doctors' accountable for
anything and they are well aware of that!
This is how many misdeeds get quietly swept under the proverbial
rug. And how others are totally exposed and even blown out of
proportion and context. It is why the media gets away
with pumping out their version of the truth and telling the stories
that only they want heard. And it is also why you almost never
see a campaign promise lived up to.
The 'Spin Doctors' (and Power Brokers) know their audience and they
'play' them well. |
