Martial Arts

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
An action filled, romantic martial arts adventure of epic proportions, with a complex plot and colorful tale of the mysterious and mythological powers of an ancient Chinese sword stolen from it's master.

* Now, if you are an "Artsy type" you will want to watch the entire film in it's original Chinese language . . . if you really want to understand the movie however, you should watch it with the English translated sound track.

Kill Bill Vol. I & II
Deadly female assassin (Uma Thurman) takes serious revenge on her co-workers and ex-boyfriend boss (David Carradine) in this violent, classic Quentin Tarantino flic (loved the soundtrack!)

Military Action

Apocalypse Now Redux
One of my long time favorites, this expanded version of Coppola's classic Vietnam war odyssey rounds out the story a bit  better as it follows a Military Intelligence captain deep into the Cambodian jungle on an N.S.A. mission to "terminate the command" of an rogue Special Forces colonel.

*45 minutes of previously unknown scenes, dramatically re-edited soundtrack, and a re-mastered print make this a must see.

Full Metal Jacket
One the best Vietnam war flicks of all time, that accurately chronicles the existential confusion and angst of young Marine recruits from the rigors of boot camp (at the hands of an exceptionally hard-core drill instructor) right into the stark realities and contradictions of war.

Black Hawk Down
Harrowing war drama recreates the true-life events of October 3, 1993, when a group of U.S. Army Rangers set off on a mission to capture a Somali warlord ... and spent the next 17 hours in one of the fiercest firefights in military history.

  Enemy At The Gate
Dark, ominous and brutal, war epic about Russian sniper playing cat-and-mouse with a feared Nazi marksman during the devastating 1942 siege of Stalingrad . . . gritty and with so much intensity . . . you just can't look away.
  Pearl Harbor
One of the best movies of the decade, recounting the 1941 Japanese surprise attack on Peal Harbor . . . with a successful mix of action, adventure, drama, romance, history and heartache.  (Critics didn't think much of it though, go figure.)

Action / Adventure

Blood Diamond
Hard hitting action thriller that grinds a harsh reality of third world social/political corruptness in your face . . . Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a masterful performance. (Not for the faint of hart.)
The Italian Job
Impeccable timing and superbly choreographed heist and chase sequences supported with a strong star studded cast; will certainly hold your attention and provide you with high entertainment value.
National Treasure
An excellent, fast-paced adventure with an invisible map on the back of the Declaration of Independence as one of the clues to the location of the biggest treasure ever; Nicolas Cage and other history nerds keep one step ahead of the bad guys on a whirlwind chase through historic sites in Boston, Philadelphia and New York City.

Chick Flick / Romance

Enchanted April
Four British women who are unhappy find a way to transform their dreary lives in rainy WWI England by spending one magical month in sunny Italy—yeah, it’s a chick flick.
Remains of Day
Anthony Hopkins gives a solid performance as a head butler at a large country estate who chooses career and duty over love for housekeeper (Emma Thompson) in WWI England.
Mystery / Crime Drama

Blow
The rise and fall of George Jung, an enterprising young American who made over $100 million importing massive amounts of cocaine into the country during the early '70s . . . fact-based story recounted from George's prison cell.

Proof of Life
Title makes it sound like a "Chick Flick" but it's not . . . this film has super intrigue and lots of tough, lethal action with Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan.

Adventure / Fantasy

Highlander
There can be only One… fantasy movie which has it all: deadly sword fights, eternal life (beginning in 1700’s Scotland and ending in modern day New York City), love lost and found as well as good vs. evil

The 13th Warrior
Adaptation of an obscure work by Michael Crichton "Eaters of the Dead," that chronicles the adventures of an exiled Arab ambassador conscripted to fight alongside Viking warriors to track down and destroy strange and mysterious creatures.  (The book is far more intriguing as always.)

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Four siblings in war-torn WWI England go through a wardrobe (armoire; closet sort of thing) and save a magical world from an evil witch with the help of talking animals

Comedy / Satire

Night at the Museum
Museum security guard (Ben Stiller) experiences the adventure of a lifetime when history comes to life and helps him rebuild his relationship with his young son; also with appearances by Robin Williams and Owen Wilson.

Scary Movie
Yes, the plot is over worked by dozens of "B" grade movies, but this "slasher" spoof follows group of silly teens as they're hacked up by a masked maniac but it is funny as hell.

Scary Movie II (and III and IV)
I couldn't get enough of the first movie and this zany, lurid sequel continues the murderous "spoofery" of several popular horror films, this time focusing on the satanic-thriller and ghost-story subgenres.

Romantic Comedy

Legally Blond
Actually a much better movie than I had anticipated, this is a frothy comedy about a young, fair-haired and "stereo-typed" woman who, after being dumped by her snobbish Harvard-bound boyfriend, enrolls in law school alongside him to try to win him back, and proceeds to prove her potential to all around her.

Monsters / Aliens

Alien vs. Predator
Visually exciting movie with great special effects and superbly designed, exotic looking sets that amplify the creepy and mysterious dimension of the movie. Storyline holds together and explains why both Alien species were on this planet in the first place.

Jurassic Park III
One of the better of the trilogy, awesomely better special effects and on top of that, it's not so much a "people-happy-meal" kind of flick as J.P. 2 was.

King Kong (2005)
This third remake with Naomi Watts and Jack Black, is a well done action adventure with startling special effects and great action sequences all kicked up a notch with dramatic cinematography . . . 100% entertaining!

SciFi

Planet of the Apes
Critics didn't like it much but the 2001 "re-interpretation" of Planet of the Apes is a classic "Tim Burton" film . . . kind of "dark" and at the same time rich in characterization and story, making for a very entertaining, well done movie.

Horror / Fantasy
Animation features

Shrek
I love this outrageous, mega-popular computer-animated fairy tale about a cranky ogre (Mike Myers) who, while trying to clear his swampy abode of pesky fairies and unicorns, rescues a princess (Cameron Diaz) and befriends a precocious donkey (Eddie Murphy).

Cars
Snappy young race car (Owen Wilson) gets lost on Route 66 and finds what’s important in life in the small town of Radiator Springs with help from an old race car (Paul Newman) and other very cool character cars…check out George Carlin as a flower child van who plays Hendrix at dawn (“you gotta respect the classics, man”) in this Oscar-nominated film.

Happy Feet
All penguins are supposed to know how to sing…Penguin (Tobey MacGuire) who dances but can’t sing stays true to himself, makes friends with hip Latin penguins (Robin Williams is awesome as the voice of both Ramon and Lovelace) and wins the heart of Gloria (Brittney Murphy) in this politically correct, eco-friendly, animated Oscar winning film.

Classic Films

Casablanca
This all-time favorite, classic movie has it all—Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman play star-crossed lovers in WWII Europe leading a cast of memorable characters with a witty script (“
Well, there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade) who desperately try to escape the Nazis in occupied Casablanca.
