Welcome to the realm of  the UFO and USO Phenomena.
The number of UFO and USO incident reports and resultant investigations that have taken place around the world is staggering, and the evidence in many cases is incontestable. For your consideration I offer  the key physical evidence evaluation criteria that must be applied in UFO investigations.

Key Physical Evidence Evaluators:

Radar Contact Evidence:

'Primary Contact' is the most solid form of radar evidence.  The term 'primary contact' is key in that all commercial and military aircraft in our skies today (World wide) have a radio device called a transponder.  Aircraft with a transponder return a distinct 'transponder' signal that sends information about the aircraft to controllers on the ground (unless purposely masked out.)

Primary radar, is the base-line standard of echo-based radar, and it is the only way of detecting a distant aircraft that has no transponder.  It is what one would expect to use to detect any "non-cooperative" objects which don't have transponder, such as UFOs!

'Multiple Primary Contacts' from multiple radar sites, such as Air Traffic Control Centers, FAA, NORAD, or NATO sites, strengthens the value of radar evidence significantly.

'Multiple Primary Contacts, Ground and Airborne Radar' is the strongest possible for of radar based evidence in that the object is tracked by multiple sites using powerful ground based radar and more mobile aircraft based radar.  In this scenario not only are multiple source factored in, there are also a larger group of highly trained expert observers involved.

There have been, and continue to be many UFO incidents where solid multi-point, 'primary contact' is established.  This type of hard data evidence is nearly impossible to dispute.  (Although there are those who will try.)

Video or Photographic Evidence:

While there are many seemingly convincing photographs and videos that have been presented as evidence of UFO encounters, this form of evidence requires considerable scrutiny.  Still photographs, and videos with a bit of effort, can be convincingly manipulated in the photo lab or on the computer (as evidenced by the UFO graphics I have prepared for the 'Inexplicable' section of Zuko.com)

Good photographic or video evidence must have these qualities:

  • Crisp clear focus to allow the photo or video to be examined at a microscopic level for evidence of tampering or alteration.

  • Open shots with additional objects in the frame such as buildings, trees, aircraft, etc, to be able to establish proper scale and perspective.

  • The appearance of foregrounds, backgrounds, shadows and lighting must adhere to the physical laws of photography (if not, it's a fraudulent image)

  • Video needs to be smooth and in focus - too many video purport erratic motion of an object when it is in fact the camera operator's shaking hands.

Still photos or videos can contribute to a strong body of evidence, however, in this age of technology, they are not conclusive.  In short still photos or videos must hold up under serious scientific and microscopic examination and the mathematical ratios must support authenticity.

Physical Trace Evidence:

Physical trace evidence includes; ground impressions, burned or desiccated soil, burned or damaged foliage resulting from a reported landing or hover site.

It would also include confirmed (and comparative) readings on increased radiation levels, magnetic anomalies, and metallic or other unusual mineral elements.

Validity of this evidence must be maintained through proper scientific collection methodologies and evaluated under strict scientific protocol.

There are several well known UFO incident investigations where this type of physical evidence has been collected by various government agencies of the United States, Great Britton, France, Germany, and Brazil.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Evidence:

Physical effect evidence includes; power black-outs, TV/Radio interference, radio or telephone communication disruption or stalled vehicles.  It also includes magnetic compass deflections and aircraft or ship navigation equipment disruption.

As with other forms of evidence, these incidents must be well documented and help up to scientific evaluation to eliminate other possible cause.

There have been more than 30 incidents of aircraft navigation and communication disruption cases recorded by NASA scientists.

The CIA, NSA, DIA, and FBI all have case files documenting incidents such as these.  One significant military UFO incident occurred over Tehran in 1976 when a U.S. F-4 interceptor experienced a total shut down of all communications and weapons systems as it was preparing to fire a missile at an unknown object in restricted airspace.  Upon landing however, the F4's systems all checked out perfectly.

Physiological Effects Evidence:

Physiological effects evidence includes; physical effects on animals and humans such as skin or corneal burns, temporary paralysis, rashes or symptoms resembling radiation poisoning.

As with all forms of evidence collection, documentation, and evaluation strict scientific protocol must be adhered to.

Biological Effects Evidence:

Biological effects evidence includes; physical effects on plants such as dramatically accelerated growth rates, out of cycle germination triggers on seeds, damage to seeds, or growth retardation.  It also includes blownout stem nodules or other peculiar damage.

As with all forms of evidence collection, documentation, and evaluation strict scientific protocol must be adhered to.

IFO's Identified Flying Objects

Based on various studies conducted on UFO and USO sighting reports, it is estimated that 80 to 90% of all sightings are eventually identified.  The remaining 10 to 20% of the sighting reports stay in the classification of unidentified.

The accuracy of this data of course depends on who is conducting the study and how they are measuring the data and to what depth.  Regardless of the statistical analysis model followed a 10 to 20% is statistically important.

Considering that there are thousands of sighting reports from around the world every year, even 10% would represent several hundred incidents in the unexplained category.

Basic Identified Flying Objects Categories:

- Astronomical: planet, star, meteor
- Aircraft: aircraft and balloon
- Natural: cloud, bird, weather, mirage
- Artificial: search lights, wind borne debris

(85+% of all IFO's are in the aircraft category)
